Tree cover loss in Cambodia and Indonesia
Two animated 3D relief maps of tree cover loss in Cambodia and Indonesia (2001-2020), based on data from Hansen, UMD, Google, USGS, and NASA.
I wanted to learn how to make those maps with fancy 3D hillshading. Cambodia was my first attempt: QGIS for the data, Blender for the 3D relief. Each year of tree cover loss lights up red on top of the terrain.
A week later Simeon Max, a former colleague from Restor, asked if I could do the same for Indonesia. Same recipe, a lot more islands.
Watch the red take over. On Sumatra and Kalimantan it spreads from the first years, and by the end there's barely any dark forest left.
Both maps are built with QGIS, Blender and ffmpeg.
