Throw a paper plane to Bali
A paper-plane game for a KLM Benelux campaign: throw it with your phone, land on Bali and win a ticket.
In 2017 I built "Vlieg ver" ("Fly far") for an awareness campaign by KLM Benelux, while I was at Kaliber. The idea: throw a paper plane, land it on Bali with the best time and you could win a ticket to Bali. The game was in Dutch and French. Kaliber was hired by TCC, and I worked with a designer, a 3D artist and a product owner. I built all the code, front end and back end.
Throwing it
The first version was online. On desktop you drag and release to launch the plane. On a phone you actually throw: the gyroscope detects the throwing motion and releases the plane. The flight path is a Catmull-Rom spline, a smooth curve that runs through a set of points, so the plane glides along it instead of flying in straight lines.
From bus stop to office
The original plan was to put the game on bus stops, with a QR code to connect your phone to the screen. There was no budget to rent kiosks, so that didn't happen. The QR code did survive. For an event at the Kaliber office we rented the biggest TV we could find and used the QR code to pair a phone with the game server over WebSockets. The phone became the controller for the plane.
Nothing from this is online anymore, so these two videos are all that's left.
